Chiang Mai is the largest and most culturally significant city in Northern Thailand population of roughly 170,000. It was once the capital of the ancient Lanna Kingdom of northern Thailand.
As a cycling destination, Chiang Mai is fast becoming a regional powerhouse. The relatively small capital city of Northern Thailand is situated in a valley, flanked by mountains on either side. Chiang Mai has the largest cycling population of all in northern Thailand and with the current strong and vibrant cycling culture, it's definitely the heartland of cycling holiday destination. The region’s great riding, mostly favorable warm all year round and a period of cold temperature climate similar to European summer weather during November to February and have made it a popular cycling destination for cyclist from neighboring country of Asia Pacific and South East Asia region.
Without a doubt Chiang Mai has become the Asian equivalent of Girona, Nice, Gent or Lucca, only with whether that’s generally better. With still less than 10 years of exposure, it’s fairly new compare to this cycling power house cities, but it’s certainly thriving.
